JOLLIJEST
This is an original story which, under another title, toured extensively for many years for the Traveling Playhouse out of New York. It is the story of a mythical kingdom whose king and queen (and their two daughters) live under the domination of The Supreme Scoreress who has banished singing, dancing and laughter...happiness of any kind....throughout the land. Into this sad kingdom comes Jollijest who embodies all the qualities that are forbidden and, by teaching the Princesses to laugh, sing and dance gives them the courage to stand up to the Sorceress. Along with these main characters is The Guard who lives his life "By the Book" and the Sorceress' bumbling attendant, Fuzzmarble, whose comic antics and changing of outrageous hats enlivens the proceedings. Two un-accompanied songs are provided and incidental recorded music is required for the "Dream-Dance sequence". It is a one set play, the Palace Courtyard, and requires four male and four female actors (unless you cast the Sorceress as an androginous male). The choice of period for the costumes is yours but I suggest that the Sorceress should come from an earlier period than the rest of the cast. Audience participation is encouraged when Fuzzmarble appears and the Sorceress, along with the audience, commands him to "Change that HAT!!!!". |
